Angkor Wat

We decided that while we were in Siem Reap, that we had to make the short trip out to Angkor Wat.
We were told by people who had been that the best time to go was for sunrise-not because the sunrise is spectacular-but because you beat the heat and you beat some of the crowd.  We rode bikes all of our time in Siem Reap, and it was very possible to ride our bikes to Angkor Wat, however, we chose to take a tuk tuk instead to save our legs and enjoy the day a bit more.

And so our day began at 6:00 AM, piling into tuktuks in the dark and taking the 10 minute ride to Angkor Wat.  Note to those considering going: it costs $20/day. You can buy a 3 day pass for $40 and a 7 day pass for $60.  I suppose it would be worth it if you really wanted to spend some time at the temples.  Not in my budget though.  We got to Angkor Wat early enough to see the crowd gathering for the sunrise.  Like I said, it was neat, but not spectacular.  It was much cooler than going in the heat of the day.  Here's some pictures from inside and around Angkor Wat:

We also went to Bayon Temple, which is mostly known for it's many faces that are carved into the stone of the temple.  For those who don't know, I take "laying down pictures" wherever I can, this is one example.

The last temple we went to was Te Prohm, which is best known for being featured in Lara Croft Tomb Raider.  The tree's overtook the temple grounds and they're trying to decide when to and if to cut any of the trees or just let them overtake the area.  It was a very awesome site.

  1. These look so cool! I AM slightly disappointed that you didn't play the part with the sleeked back hair and midriff-showing shirt, and guns for the "Lara Croft" look. If you're gonna go to Angkor Wat, dress the part. Jeesh...
